The 20-year-old has postponed contract talks and
fuelled speculation linking him with the Gunners but his manager is
confident his star winger will remain on Merseyside
Brendan Rodgers insists Raheem Sterling will not be leaving Liverpool this summer and believes the club’s stature cannot be compared with Arsenal.
In an interview with BBC Sport on Wednesday, Sterling revealed he has postponed all contract talks until the end of the season and admitted he was flattered by reports linking him with a move to the Gunners.
But Rodgers is adamant Liverpool are not overly concerned by the attitude of the 20-year-old - whose current deal expires in the summer of 2017 - and argues that Arsenal cannot match the stature of the Anfield giants.
"[The interview] surprised us all," Rodgers told reporters. "He's a young player who's still learning, on and off the field. You make mistakes in your life, especially when you're young.
"Raheem has said his ambition is to win trophies and be successful. Arsenal is a great club - but this is Liverpool.
"Liverpool is one of the superpowers of world football. If it doesn't want to sell it won't sell.
“He's got two-and-a-half years left on his deal. We're not overly concerned. He's not going anywhere in the summer."
Liverpool
are being punished for their mistreatment of Suso. Once the two,
Sterling and Suso were at par and Liverpool felt only one should
develop at Melwood and the other elsewhere on loan. When the former
shown immediate promising form, they despised the loaned one to the
extent of outright sale when the youngster believed he still had
something to prove at Anfield.
Had Suso stayed and
shared some playtime with Sterling, things could have been different. I
couldn't even understand why was Ibe previously loaned before a January
recall while he is far better than the money-grabber. Ibe proved that
during pre-season.
Liverpool need to learn a lesson now, once and for all!
